When Atiqa Begum was on death bed after she suffered a heart attack in 2005, her only wish was to have a glimpse of her son, Manzoor Ahmad Ganai.
Eleven years ago, Manzoor, a resident of Methan in Chanapora, left his home and never returned after he was reportedly picked up by the Border Secuirty Forces (BSF). Later, Begum died without a glimpse of her son.
Manzoor (25), a conductor with a mini-bus, was the only breadwinner of his family. The day Manzoor was reported missing, his mother had a premonition during the day "that something wrong has happened to him". Later, eyewitnesses told her that Manzoor was picked up by the personnel of 34 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) when he was waiting for bus at Jawaharnagar. A bus driver was also a witness to his arrest.
"We went to the BSF camp of 34 Bn but they refused that they have arrest my brother," says Manzoor's sister Naseema Akhter. Manzoo's family also lodged an FIR in Rajbagh police station.
Since then, an unending search began for the family. "We went to every prison, every interrogation and every security camp," says Naseema. "We sought the intervention of the then deputy commissioner and the divisional commissioner. But it didn't yield anything".
Distraught by the approach of the J-K government, Manzoor's family approached the J-K High court for justice but the justice is still eluding for the family. "The court has declared that Manzoor was arrested by the BSF without any legal authority," says Abdul Majeed, brother of missing Manzoor. "Ten years have passed but the case is still lying in the High Court and nothing substantial has come out."
Manzoor's mother Begum was a heart patient and couldn't bear the separation of her son. "She died of a heart attack as she loved Manzoor very much and couldn't bear the tragedy," says Majeed.
The family has resigned to fate now. "I am sure that the soldiers have killed my brother, but we want to know that where they have buried my brother. I wan to go there and weep," says Akhter.
